National Nutrition Month

The American Dietetic Association urges everyone to focus attention on the importance of making informed food choices and developing sound eating and physical activity habits.

The American Dietetic Association created Nutrition Month in 1973 to promote healthy eating for everyone. Use this month to learn more about nutrition and eating healthy foods.

Learn About the Different Food Groups

* Grains and Cereals
Whole grain products include breads, pastas, and cereals that are made with 100% whole grain and not with white processed flours. Whole grains are made from the whole kernels of grain, that is both the inside part of the grain and the outer covering. Processed flours remove the outer covering which gives a lighter texture and taste to baked goods but removes a lot of the nutrition and fiber. Enriched breads have some nutrients returned to the bread.

* Meats and Proteins
The meat and protein food group includes more than red meat. Fish, poultry, nuts, seeds, legumes and eggs are also included in the meat and protein group.

* Fruits and Vegetables
We all need 5 to 9 servings of fruits and vegetables every day.

* Milk, Dairy and Calcium
Milk and dairy products contain lots of calcium. Experts suggest consuming two or three servings each day. Don't like dairy? Don't worry -- there are other ways to get your calcium, too.
